INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY SESSION

In private practice, I specialize in working with children ages 9+, adolescents and adults.

All sessions are either online or in-person.

WHAT IS AN ART THERAPY SESSION?

Art therapy clients are able to deal with the same kinds of issues they would deal with in conventional talk therapies, however, they engage in the therapy by working with art materials as well as talking with the Art Therapist. The proportion of art making to talking, and the precise way in which the two forms of communication are blended together for therapeutic effect, will vary according to your needs and the presenting situation. A diverse selection of traditional and alternative art materials and surfaces are offered. You don’t have to identify as an artist. There is no right or wrong way to make art in art therapy sessions.

Materials may include acrylic paints; watercolour paints; clay; coloured pencils; fabric; photography and a variety of found objects including images for collages.

The other part of the session is used to discuss the art making experience and the resulting artwork in the confidential and empathetic environment.

No art experience is needed.

HOW MANY  SESSIONS ARE RECOMMENDED?

It is possible to benefit from just one session, depending on your goals and your situation. During the session, you will also learn about activities you can continue at home on your own. However, the ideal scenario would be to come for at least four art therapy sessions, that way there is a chance to build on the work done previously in the initial sessions. For some people the ideal model is six to ten sessions, for others it is to continue with art therapy sessions over many months. Whatever is best for you can be done.

WHAT IS MY THERAPEUTIC APPROACH?

I work from a trauma-informed perspective. My therapeutic approach is person-centred and strength-based, and grounded in mindfulness practices. Having taught yoga  for 8 years allows me to  integrate these practices into my therapeutic work as a way to support individuals by bringing awareness to their mind-body connection, and to help them build healthy and effective coping skills.

IS PSYCHOTHERAPY COVERED BY OHIP OR INSURANCE?

Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP. However, many extended health care benefits do provide coverage for psychotherapy. Your insurance provider can help you determine the coverage with your plan.

  • Accepts all insurance plans that covers psychotherapy

  • The Canada Revenue Agency recognizes the cost of services provided by Registered Psychotherapists as a medical expense eligible for tax credit.

  • ** Limited sliding scale spots are available in my practice. Sliding scale spots are determined by your combined household income and availability in the practice. Please inquire at your initial consultation for further details.
